The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) stands as the central and paramount Islamic body, representing Australian-based Muslim Imams, scholars, and clerics. Established in 2006 as a registered public company, ANIC functions as an umbrella organisation with a Council of Imams, each representing a state or territory in Australia.
Dedicated to preserving the mainstream understanding and teachings of Islam in alignment with the Quran, Sunnah, and the traditional interpretations of Muslim scholars, ANIC also strives to unify the Councils of Imams across Australian states and territories. This involves coordinating their activities alongside those of other esteemed scholars and clerics, representing the broader interests of the Australian Muslim community across various domains for the greater benefit of all constituents.
ANIC's governance involves a General Assembly of member imams, who elect a 20-member ANIC executive board representing state imams councils every three years. Notably, ANIC's Inaugural General Assembly Meeting in March 2006, held in Sydney, saw a significant resolution empowering the executive board to elect and appoint the position of the Grand Mufti of Australia.
